Although riggers work in a field which helps to promote our economy, they're often called to serve as emergency workers in situations which require emergency management (also known as disaster management).
For example, in the terrible tragedy known as 9/11, several volunteer companies like Anglemyer Crane and United Riggers & Erectors' employees helped to remove the debris and rescue survivors from the wreckage which was caused by terrorist attacks. A 36 ton piece of steel formerly from the World Trade Center was set at the Los Angeles Fire Department Training Center as a monument to New York Firefighters.
